Digital Native vs. Digital Immigrant
I would consider myself a digital native. By definition, I fall under this category for many reasons. I grew up using a computer in school and remember my parents purchasing our first computer for my dad's office (Gateway...the cow box). Listing to the AOL dial up and blocking the phone line for hours is a fond memory I have. Using technology in my everyday activities makes me an enthusiastic or eager adopter, but some of the criteria doesn't yet apply to me. I still like to have a great conversation in person or on the phone rather than a text convo, but having so many friends who live out of town it helps us stay close together. Trying to find a good balance of digital lifestyles with some of the "old-fashioned values is difficult, and I know will continue to be difficult as the surge of technology continues. I worry about the health risks and social interaction with people being altered the most. Yes I am a digital citizen; I have to be, but will always put the health and safety of my students and my family first. I would agree that there is a gap that makes working difficult between generations, but that too has to have a balance.
